Most Improved Runners

Each year the Club recognises the “Most Improved Male” and “Most Improved Female”.  These awards are based on an analysis of all members’ age graded results.

Calculations for the most improved Male and Female will be made prior to our AGM based upon data for the calendar year from 1 January up to the date of the AGM (typically mid October).

Qualification Criteria

  1. Members must be in at least their second membership year as a first claim member
  2. Results must be attributed to the member on Power of 10 with CAR as the primary club.
  3. Only results within road races across the following distances will be considered; Mile (inc Track), 5K (inc parkrun), 10K, 10 Mile, Half Marathon and Marathon
  4. Qualifying members must have raced a minimum of three difference distances within the qualifying period. These do not have to be the same distances from year to year.
  5. Qualifying members must have raced at least five times in total in each year.
  6. A member must demonstrate a year over year improvement, based on their best five Age Graded results from each year. The best Age Graded results do not need to be from different distances, for example five parkruns can count (as long as the member has also completed at least three different distances in total as per point 4).

Award Criteria

The Most Improved Award will be awarded to the Male and Female members who meet the above qualification criteria and have demonstrated the greatest positive improvement in their performance over a maximum period of three years (or less for newer members for whom we only have two years’ of data).

What is Age Grading?

Age grading is a way to adjust an athlete’s performance according to age and gender. The age-grading tables were developed by the World Association of Veteran Athletes.  The tables work by recording the world record performance for each age at each distance, for men and women.  An individual’s performance is then compared to the world record for their age and gender.

For example, the world record for a 53 year old woman running a 10km is 35:01. So if a 53 year old woman finishes a 10km in 45:18, she has an age-graded performance of 77.3% (which is 35:01 divided by 45:18)
